With just eight weeks to go until Climate Week NYC, we're exploring how important creating sustainable food practises are for meeting our climate goals.
The global food system is responsible for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and accounts for 30% of the world's total energy consumption. In our Food System at Climate Group, we’re working with powerful coalitions of corporates and governments to target a range of issues within the global food supply chains, particularly in shifting demand and diets.
We sat down with Head of Climate Group Europe, Jeroen Gerlag, to understand why food is one of the focus areas of our work. Jeroen outlines that "the food procurement budget of governments can reach up to 12 - 20%. It's very important to work on this topic to decarbonize food supply chains, and meet our global climate targets."
Climate Group aims:
- to understand the capacity gaps and the barriers in relation to setting sustainable food procurement strategies and policies.
- to learn from city-level food procurement and transfer this to subnational governments.
- to work toward achieving a net-zero food system
To understand what sustainable food procurement and a sustainable supply chain can look like, we sat down with Neeti Jain, Strategic Partnerships Advisor at New York City Mayor's Office of Food Policy, to hear about the work that New York City are doing to create a more sustainable food system for New Yorkers. They found that plant forward menus are key to reducing carbon emisisons. In public schools, Meatless Mondays and Plant-powered Fridays are the norm, educating students about where their food comes from, so they can make educated decisions about what they put on their plate.
